Plan to Be Found Before You Get Lost

The time to prepare to be rescued is before you ever need to signal for help. Following are some essential survival tips.   Leave a trip itinerary with a trustworthy and reliable friend. Include times that you expect to be at certain locations. Indicate wherever you’re traveling, your path, and the time you’re anticipated.

If your travel plan modifies, appraise your home contact immediately. Detail any imaginable adjustments to your itinerary. Have pre-arranged meeting places for members of your party if you become separated. This will enable emergency personnel to locate your party if you’re lost.

It’s also helpful to include entries about the physical condition of the group members, medicines, tents, clothes, water and contact information for immediate family and physicians.

“I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks.” Daniel Boone

Should you arrive at a similar state of confusion and require assistance, there are several ways to signal for help.

To signal for help you may use a variety of items such as radio beacons, colorful cloth, fires, flashlights, smoke, whistles or mirrors. Remaining composed can make it possible for you to apply your resourcefulness and contrive a constructive means to signal likely assistance. Recognizing your alternatives can preserve your life by preventing you from arriving at a mortal mistake.

At the moment you realize you are lost, create a marker to designate your spot. In order to easily identify your position, create a pile of rocks, brush, or break some twigs. This will be your base. If you decide to try and make your way out, this is where you will return for another try if your first attempts fail. This will also be the place you wait for rescuers.

Leave a note at this location if you decide to move from it. Announce your plans and your travel direction. While you journey tag the path at regular points with stones, broken branches, or some other easily recognizable sign to show where you’ve walked. These markings will help search teams determine your location.
