Rock Climbing Basics What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you have just started rock climbing, you need to familiarize yourself with the rock climbing basics. Note that learning rock climbing basics is essential to ensure your safety when climbing. Furthermore, if you know your rock climbing basics, it will be easier for you to progress from a beginner to a more advanced level in rock climbing.Understanding Rock Climbing Basics

If you are into rock climbing, you often work with another person. Note in indoor rock climbing, climbers work in pairs where one belays and the other climbs. The belayer has a very important job of keeping the climber safe. He or she feeds rope to the climber with the use of a belaying device. In case the climber falls, the belayer breaks the fall by locking off the rope. The belayer needs to be quite strong to be able to absorb the weight of the climber in case of a fall.

As part of rock climbing basics, the stronger person should always be the lead climber. Note that the lead climber will need to do some free climbs along the way. Since lead climbers often go through some dangerous procedures, it is very important that he or she is strong enough to hang on tight when the going gets really rough.

Once the lead climber reaches the top, he will fasten a secure anchor so that he can belay his partner as his partner climbs. Technically, the lead climber does a lot of work compared to the belayer because he needs to make sure that his partner is able to climb safely to the top.

Can Both Climbers Climb Together at Once?

Although rock climbing basics tell us that it is not advisable for climbers to climb simultaneously, some climbers do climb together. This technique which is often called simul-climbing can speed up the climbing process. However, since none of the climbers stop to belay for the other, simul-climbing can quite dangerous.

Note that if one of the climbers loses his hold, he could pull the other climber with him. Since there is nobody who will break the fall, the result is often very unpleasant. According to experts, simul-climbing should never be attempted by beginners. Beginners and professionals should never take unnecessary risks especially when they are doing rock climbing outdoors. The terrain is less structured when Mother Nature makes the mountains this makes it more challenging but can be more fun and unpredictable as well.
