Rock Climbing Introduction - The Three Types

Rock climbing is, without a doubt, one of the most fun and enjoyable sports out there. However, if you are new to the sport then you are going to want to get at least a basic rock climbing introduction, so that you can get a general idea about the sport and about what is involved. If you have been rock climbing before then you know that it is definitely not the easiest sport, as both indoor and outdoor rock climbing are extremely demanding and require practice, just as any other sport does. Depending on what type of climbing you have tried, you most likely have noticed that you got an incredible workout in any case, and in a very short period of time at that.

Introduction to Different Types of Rock Climbing

Top Roping

One of the most important rock climbing introduction topics is in regards to the three different types of climbing. Top roping is the most common type and it is basically climbing with a partner. The partner will belay you on the ground and a rope will run from his harness up to the top of the wall and then around a pulley and then back down, attaching to the climbers harness.

Lead Climbing

The second type is very similar to top roping, and it is known as lead climbing. In this case, the buddy system works the same way basically, with one man on the ground belaying and the other climbing. Only this time instead of the rope being up at the top of the wall it has to be hooked up to into clasps as the climber ascends up the wall. In both these types of rock climbing the climber has the luxury of being able to sit off the wall and rest on the rope.

However, with lead climbing, the climber is required to hang from the wall from one hand, grab the rope, and pull it up to clip it properly into the clasps and this can be extremely physically challenging, depending on different factors.

Bouldering

Then there is the third type of rock climbing, which is known as bouldering, and this is a type of free climbing which has no ropes or harnesses, thus easily making it the most challenging out of the three by far. The climber here tends to stay much closer to the ground and climbs around the wall more than up the wall.

As long as you have a basic rock climbing introduction under your belt then you can get started, just make sure that you continue to practice safety and revise instructions along the way.
