Understanding Different Rock Climbing Terms

On SightIn order to understand rock climbing fully, you need to recognize and learn about the different rock climbing terms that are used within the sport. The clearest expression of free climbing on the first time ascending of a route or pitch is called ‘on sight’. This is the complete free climb on the first attempt, without any preview or systematic falls and also without information or any previous attempts made on the route.

Beta Flash

Another one of the most important rock climbing terms is ‘beta flash’, and this refers to the ascend of a route or pitch of which you have previously gathered information for, such as some special moves or a hidden hold. Then there is ‘red point’, which is the ascending of a route or a pitch after some attempts or groundwork has been made on the route and with the quickdraws placed on the safety points.

Back Clipping

Another of the basic rock climbing terms is ‘back-clipping’, which is a term that refers to a hazardous mistake that can be made while lead climbing. What happens here is that the belay rope is clipped into a quickdraw in the wrong direction and this results in causing an interference in friction on the rope and thus an increase in the likelihood of the rope becoming unclipped during a fall.

Belay Device

‘Belay device’ is another of the important rock climbing terms which refers to the mechanical device which is used when belaying. Many types of belay devices exist, including for instance the ATC, grigri, Reverso, Sticht plate, eight, tuber, and the Munter hitch. There is also ‘bouldering’, which is the practice of climbing up on large boulders, and this is typically close to the ground, so protection takes the form of crash pads and spotting, rather than belay ropes, as usual.

Deadman

‘Deadman’ is a term which refers to a dynamic climbing technique in which the hold is grabbed at the apex of upward notion and this technique works by placing minimal strain on both the hold and the arms. A ‘flapper’ is an injury consisting of a piece of loose flapping skin, and a climber will usually just repair this with a piece of sticky tape.

There are so many more rock climbing terms that are important to know as well, however as long as you know the basics you should be okay at first. Nevertheless, you are going to want to make sure that you learn as many of the terms as you can as quickly as possible, so that you will be able to understand rock climbing better.
